About USCG Headquarters

The U.S. Coast Guard is headquartered on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave SE in Washington, DC. in a facility formerly known as St. Elizabeth's hospital. Until 2003, the Coast Guard did not have a home of its own.

The Coast Guard has remained one of the five units of the United States Armed Forces throughout its existence, but is currently the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security. Its nearly 42,000 men and women on active duty act to save lives, intercept smugglers and illegal migrants, enforce the country's laws and treaties, and protect its ports and natural resources. It is unique in that it carries numerous civil and military responsibilities which impact almost every facet of the U.S. maritime environment.

The Coast Guard Headquarters in Southeast in Washington, DC allows its workers easy access to multiple means of transportation. The facility itself has highways on either side, and is walking distance to the nearest Metro Station. All of these factors combine to simplify housing searches for its workers.

The city of Washington, DC, with its abundance of colorful and unique neighborhoods, offers a combination of old and new architectural styles, often in close proximity to each other.   There are historical townhouses and row houses, as well as an interesting mix of sparkling new condos, co-ops and apartments. In addition to living in 'the city' itself, transportation makes commuting to the cities and suburbs of Maryland and Northern Virginia easy.

Residents of Southeast DC are close to Washington Nationals Park, the historic Eastern Market, Navy Yard, Anacostia River, and Capitol Hill, where prices average $725,000. Rentals are offered in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia also, with spring through late summer consistently proving to be peak season for those seeking to lease a property.

There is ample opportunity in the nation's capital to pique the interest of every resident: from history, museums, and cultural pursuits to sports and outdoor activities, shopping, dining and entertainment.
