Just north of Sumter, SC is the expansive military installation of Shaw Air Force Base.
Shaw plays a significant role in the regional economy. The base is located 35 miles to the east of Columbia and encompasses a community of 5400 active duty military personnel and 11,000 family members. More than 600 civilians are also employed at the base.
Many active duty and retirees choose to live in Sumter, SC. Sumter encompasses the distinctive areas known as East Sumter and South Sumter, sections of the city which have emerged through natural growth patterns. Sumter is home to the world famous Swan Lake Iris Gardens, an exquisitely beautiful outdoor attraction. An expanding industrial base, with large local employers such as: Pilgrim's Pride, Eaton Electrical, and BD Preanalytical Solutions, and the close proximity to Shaw Air Force Base make Sumter a desirable location.
Many residents choose Sumter because of its small-town feel with large city amenities. Neighborhoods feature affordable, primarily older homes shaded by mature greenery on tranquil streets. New Home Communities offer another option of home styles with community amenities.
Golf courses, Poinsett State Park, and Woods Bay State Park are a few of the outdoor recreational options available in Sumter. And there's plenty of shopping, too, from boutiques to large retailers.
Due to the growth of the Sumter area, Tuomey Medical Center has expanded significantly. Located in the center of town, the medical center has inspired redevelopment of the Sumter downtown area. With renovations underway on many of the historic buildings, the downtown area is attracting new businesses, restaurants and boutiques.
The median sales price of homes in Sumter is around $110,500.
There are a variety of award-winning schools to choose from in the Sumter School District: 16 elementary schools, seven middle schools, and three high schools, in addition to five private schools, four of which are K-12.
Highway 378 runs adjacent to Shaw AFB and also right by downtown Sumter, affording easy access to the northern portion of the Grand Strand (Myrtle Beach.) I-95 also runs through Sumter County, and it runs all the way up and down the East Coast, allowing relatively easy travel to anywhere on the East Coast.
