About Naval Station Newport

Naval Station Newport is a United States Navy base located in Newport, Rhode Island.   It is currently the only active base in the state. Newport is known as the "Birthplace of the Navy".  Today, it is the home of the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center.

Newport is the largest city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, about 30 miles south of Providence. The 2010 population was 24,672, and the city has a total area of 11.5 square miles, 7.9 square miles land and 3.5 square miles water. With coastlines on the west, south and east, Newport is truly a maritime city, and is known as the sailing capitol of the United States.

Newport combines three communities into one:  year-round residents, the Navy, and summer visitors.  Housing consists primarily of single family homes, condos and apartments, and the median home price in 2011 was $352,000.

In Newport, recreational opportunities abound:

  • The International Tennis Hall of Fame
  • Historic Newport Mansions
  • Newport Art Museum

Newport's climate is traditional 'New England,' with temperature variations amongst the four seasons.  Over the course of a year, the temperature typically varies from 22øF to 79øF and is rarely below 10øF or above 85øF.

Newport's economy, in addition to the Naval base, depends heavily on wholesale and retail trade and services catering to summer residents and tourists.  Some light industry plus fishing and lobstering also contribute to Newport's economy.  Neighboring towns in Aquidneck Island  - Middletown and Portsmouth - have become a high-technology hub with more than 80 software and engineering firms employing a large portion of the labor force.

Theodore Francis Green Airport in Warwick is located approximately 40 minutes from Newport and is served by a number of major airlines. Boston's Logan International Airport is approximately two hours from Newport and provides access to points across the country and around the globe. Highway access from the west is via Interstate 195 to state highways 138 and 114. Bonanza Bus Lines was started in Newport 50 years ago and connects the Aquidneck Island area to a number of major New England cities.
