About Naval Medical Center Portsmouth

Blanketing southeastern Virginia where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic, Hampton Roads is divided between the "Southside'': Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk and Virginia Beach; and the "Peninsula": Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is situated in southeastern quadrant of Hampton Roads in Portsmouth, Virginia. The Navy is proud to claim it as the oldest continuous operating hospital in the Navy. Naval Medical Center Portsmouth is home to 4300 officers, sailors, and civilians who work at various locations from Yorktown to Chesapeake. These dedicated personnel provide medical care to approximately 420,000 active duty, civilian, and retired personnel. 

Nestled between the Elizabeth River on the east and the Chesapeake Bay on the north, Portsmouth has a small town atmosphere, yet is just 15 minutes from Norfolk International Airport, and 30 minutes from Virginia Beach.

In addition to Navy installations, Hampton Roads is home to Army and Air Force installations such as Fort Eustis, Fort Langley, Fort Story, Camp Peary, and Langley Air Force Base.

Portsmouth

An urban wildlife refuge is also part of the diverse findings within Portsmouth; be sure to visit Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve. Nature lovers embrace this 142-acre paradise. It  is home to white-tailed deer, red foxes, river otters, and hundreds of varieties of migratory and resident birds. And Golfers will enjoy the six area golf courses, all within easy reach.
