Goose Creek, South Carolina is located in both Charleston and Berkeley counties a few short miles from the historic city of Charleston. The city was incorporated in 1961, but it has a long and proud history dating as far back as the 17th century. A group of settlers from Barbados who settled near a stream named Goose Creek were known as the "Goose Creek Men." They were Native American slave traders who supported the Anglican Church and the rights of Huguenots to enjoy religious freedom in South Carolina.
The presence of the Naval Nuclear Power School, the Nuclear Power Training Unit and SPAWAR*, on what is commonly known as the Naval Weapons Station, contribute significantly to the economy of Goose Creek and its related counties. Currently the population of Goose Creek is approximately 36,000 and the city continues to grow as a result of urban planning and quality growth.
Crowfield Plantation, an expansive community in Goose Creek, was begun in the 1970's by Westvaco Development, the real estate arm of Westvaco Corporation. It is the largest community of its kind in the Metro Charleston area comprised of distinctively separate subdivisions. It is centrally located with easy access to downtown Charleston via I-26, Charleston AFB and the Naval Weapons Station. Crowfield has four pools, two tennis courts, a lake, six parks, a golf course and 26 miles of leisure trails.
As with many of the municipalities in the Metro Charleston area the Goose Creek Recreation Department provides sports for adults and children in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, and gymnastics.
