About Fort Hamilton

Home of the NYC Recruiting Battalion and the North Atlantic Division of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Hamilton also encompasses the Military Entrance Processing Station, the 1179th Transportation Brigade and the 722nd Aeromedical Staging Squadron.
Fort Hamilton sits on the famed Narrows connecting Upper and Lower New York Bay.  At the very end of the Revolutionary War, British warships headed home in defeat through the Narrows before entering the Atlantic Ocean.  Fort Hamilton itself was built in the 1830 for two purposes, as a way to repel hostile naval forces advancing on New York Harbor as well as to ward off land invasions headed towards New York City.

The Fort is named in honor of Alexander Hamilton, distinguished Revolutionary War and the first Secretary of Treasury of the United States.  The cornerstone of the fort was first laid in 1825 and construction was completed in 1931.  The total cost of the construction effort was over $400,000.

In both World War I and World War II, Fort Hamilton served as the major point of embarkation before soldiers headed to battle in the European theater.  Today, Fort Hamilton is under the joint command of the Installation Management Command and the Military District of Washington. It provides housing and essential services for more than 50,000 active, reserve and retired military personnel and their families.

Fort Hamilton sits at the foot of Brooklyn, a few short miles from the various neighborhoods that dot Brooklyn, including  Bensonhurst, Fort Green, Gowanus, Williamsburg and more.  With an exciting and diverse community Brooklyn offers all that Manhattan has to offer but with its own style.  It also is now home to its own professional basketball team, the Brooklyn Nets, the first such team to call Brooklyn home since the baseball team the Brooklyn Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in the late 1950's.

Brooklyn has an excellent public transportation system that can get you to the hustle and bustle of Manhattan or for a little relaxation, to one of the many Long Island beaches.

The New York City Department of Education consists of over 1,700 schools that serve roughly 1.1 million students every year.
