About Fort Devens

Named for Civil War hero Charles Devens, Fort Devens is located on 5000 acres in Shirley and Ayer, Massachusetts with additional training facilities in nearby Lancaster, Massachusetts.  It was closed in 1995 and reopened the very next day as a Training facility for the Reserves.  The facilities are numerous and varied: both military and civilian.  There are plans for the community to become its own official town.     There is no government housing on Fort Devens, but housing can be found in the many communities of this beautiful area including Ayer, Littleton, Shirley, Lancaster and others.  Larger urban areas of Lowell and Boston are just a short drive away. Ski or snowboard in nearby New Hampshire and Vermont.  In Devens, itself, there are beautiful natural resources for outdoor activity, such as Mirror Lake Park, golf, walking trails and more.
