About China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station

During World War II, the California Institute of Technology needed additional space for rocket testing. This was essentially around the same time that the Navy was seeking additional proving ground; this site (formerly known as the Naval Ordinance Test Station) was built adjacent to Ridgecrest to fill both of their needs.
Surrounded by mountains, picturesque Ridgecrest is adjacent to three different urban centers (San Bernadino, Lancaster/Palmdale and Bakersfield). As part of the California High Desert, Ridgecrest residents enjoy exceptionally pleasant weather and have a wealth of recreation opportunities around them.
Aside from all of the natural beauty, there is a wealth of cultural and entertainment opportunities in the area, including opera, theater and music. Ridgecrest residents enjoy a high quality of life
