The 152nd Airlift Wing is the home of the C-130 Hercules, Air National Guard, and has more than 1100 men and women serving today. Their mission is to respond to worldwide C-130 air lift, air drop and reconnaissance missions rapidly, successfully and safely. This unit operates out of Reno-Tahoe International Airport in Reno, Nevada. In addition to the Air National Guard, Reno is home to approximately 1000 Army National Guard soldiers who support Nevada and the US Army in a multitude of positions from fire fighters to military police.
Reno is 105.9 square mile just east of the Sierra Nevada on the western edge of the Great Basin. With an elevation of 4400 feet above sea level, Reno has a steppe climate. It is hot and dry in the summer and the winters are filled with cool, sun-filled days. With an average of 252 sunny days, it is one of the most comfortable places to live in the United States!
Reno's location makes it an outdoor paradise. In the summer, locals can enjoy Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake or can choose to kayak or tube down the Truckee River that winds through the center of town. Bikers can traverse Lake Tahoe (the second biggest Alpine Lake in the world) on the Rim Trail and can be inspired by the International competition that frequents the trail. In the winter, there are 8 major ski resorts as close as 11 miles and as far as 98 miles from Reno-Tahoe International Airport.
The oldest University in the state, founded in 1864, University of Nevada, Reno, also offers military members the chance to enhance their education. As a top tier university, UNR has 15,082 undergraduates and offers 50 undergraduate degrees. The university specializes in research, engineering, medicine, journalism, business, and education. UNR is also home to one of the larges earthquake simulation laboratories in the country.
