Wantagh, NY | Coast Guard | www.uscg.mil/d1/staJonesBeach/ |
The Coast Guard's history in Long Island, New York started in the mid 1800's and at one time, there were seven U.S. Life Saving Stations on the southern side of Long Island. The Coast Guard Station Jones Beach was originally named "Station Short Beach" from the land formation east of Jones Inlet. Originally the building was constructed using wood and later replaced with a two story brick building including a watch tower and boathouse. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) Project was responsible for this construction under President F.D. Roosevelt's administration. The present facility started construction in 1987 and was dedicated in 1990. The current, multi-use facility houses operations, administration and berthing while the new boathouse provides necessary equipment and storage. The new name is "Station Jones Beach".
