About Naval Weapons Station Yorktown

Home to perhaps the largest military concentration in the world, the Hampton Roads Region includes Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, and Virginia Beach.

Positioned in southeastern Virginia where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, Hampton Roads is divided between the "Southside'': Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk and Virginia Beach; and the "Peninsula": Gloucester, Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg, James City County and York County.

Naval Weapons Station Yorktown and Cheatham Annex are located on the Peninsula adjacent to the cities of Newport News and Williamsburg. The base covers approximately 20 square miles with much of the base along the York River shoreline. Known as one of the Navy's 'explosive corridors', Naval Weapons Station Yorktown provides ordnance logistics, technical, supply and related services to the Atlantic Fleet.

Naval Weapons Station Yorktown is home to 37 tenant commands which include:  Naval Munitions Command, the Naval Ophthalmic Support and Training Activity, the Marine Corps Second Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team, Fleet Industrial Supply Center Detachment, Navy Expeditionary Logistics Support Group, Naval Expeditionary Medical Support Command, and Navy Cargo Handling Battalion One.
